Gates of Spitzkoppe – Entrance Points & Visitor Access

Gates of Spitzkoppe - Entrance Points & Visitor Access

The gates of Spitzkoppe are the main access points for visitors entering this well known desert landmark in Namibia. Spitzkoppe is one of the most memorable places to stay in the country, and many visitors are encouraged to spend at least one night camping near the granite peaks. Staying overnight allows you to enjoy the quiet desert environment and clear night skies around Spitzkoppe.

Often called Namibia’s Matterhorn because of its pointed shape, Spitzkoppe rises about 670 meters above the flat desert plains. The name Spitzkoppe means pointed dome in German. During the day, the granite peaks stand clearly against the sky, and at night the area becomes very dark, making it a good place to watch the stars.

Spitzkoppe is located in the central eastern part of the Erongo Region. It can be reached from several directions, although the last part of the drive is on gravel roads. Visitors driving into the reserve should be careful of sandy sections, especially when heading toward campsites or rock formations.

The main access point is the southern entrance, which is the primary gate of the Spitzkoppe Community Reserve. This gate serves as the main reception area for both day visitors and overnight guests. All entry and camping fees are paid here, and visitors receive basic information about the park.
