The Spitzkoppe tour via the Moon Landscape and Swakop River Valley tour is one of the most popular full day trips in Namibia. The Spitzkoppe granite peaks rise high from the desert and are often called the Matterhorn of Namibia because of the sharp shape of one peak. Spitzkoppe is one of the highest rock formations in the country and is well known for its ancient Bushmen rock art, which can still be seen today. This tour combines desert scenery, river valleys, and cultural sites in one day, making it a good choice to include in your travel plans.
The Tour Experience
Your day starts at around 08:00 with pickup from your accommodation in Walvis Bay or Swakopmund. After a short briefing, you travel in a 4×4 vehicle toward the Swakop River Valley via Dune 7. At Dune 7, you have time to climb the tallest dune in the Walvis Bay area, which is about 132 meters high.
From Dune 7, the journey continues to the Welwitschia plains to see the Welwitschia mirabilis, a plant that only grows in this region. You then drive into the Swakop River Bed, where you see rock formations and may spot animals such as klipspringer, ostrich, and baboons.
A short stop is made at Goanikontes Oasis before continuing to a viewpoint over the Moon Landscape. From this viewpoint, it is a short drive to the B2 road on the way to Spitzkoppe.
You arrive at Spitzkoppe at around 12:00. Lunch is served under the shade of an acacia tree before the walk begins. Your first stop is viewing the ancient Bushmen rock art. Your guide explains the geology of Spitzkoppe and shows you the best places for photos, including the rock arch and natural pools.
At around 14:30, you start the return journey via the B2 road. The tour ends at about 17:30.
